On the afternoon of July 31, the "Ninth China Energy Storage Industry Research Group" jointly organized by the Energy Storage Application Branch of China Industrial Association of Power Sources (CESA) and China Energy Storage Network (ESCN) visited Bergstrom China. During the visit, the group had an exchange and discussion with the Bergstrom team. On behalf of Bergstrom, Mr. Chen introduced our global background, thermal management products and solutions, and our technological, market and service capabilities to the research group. The two sides discussed extensively the topic of battery energy storage thermal management.
For more than 70 years, Bergstrom has been committed to providing technology-leading thermal management systems and services for high-end consumers and the construction markets.
Headquartered in the Chicago metropolitan area of the US, Bergstrom has two manufacturing bases in Changzhou City, Jiangsu Province, with an area of 25,000 square meters. The two facilities manufacture core components and assemble HVACs respectively. The total number of employees of Bergstrom China exceeds 700, and the sales is over RMB 1 billion yuan. Bergstrom China also won the title of Star Enterprise issued by the Changzhou Municipal Government.
The TEC (Thermal Environment Chamber) located in the same industrial park has a total volume of 880 cubic meters (20x8x5.5m length x width x height), which is the largest single thermal management system testing facility in China and can fit an entire 40-foot container battery energy storage system (BESS), precisely control the internal ambient temperature from -40 to +60 ℃, simulate harsh outdoor environmental conditions, and test the control effect of the battery environment, the safety of the battery packs at high temperatures, and their degradation and performance in a cold winter.
Headquartered in the US, Bergstrom has wholly-owned subsidiaries, joint ventures or offices in the UK, Spain, China, Mexico, Brazil and India, which can provide global market support and services for customers' projects.
BESS Thermal Management Solutions
Air Cooling Unit
Liquid Cooling Unit
With state-of-the-art capabilities in engineering and manufacturing both the end products and core components, Bergstrom has developed series of energy storage air cooling (BESTic) and liquid cooling (BESTic+) systems to meet the needs of different BESS applications with precise temperature control, high efficiency and reliability.

The research group said at the meeting that at present, safety was still a key technical bottleneck for the development of new energy storage systems. They made three suggestions in regard to improving BESS safety: 1. Carry out research on standardized performance test methods for BESS thermal management systems; 2. Various parties including power generation companies, design institutes, power grids, fire departments, etc. should conduct joint research on lithium BESS technology safety in terms of battery materials, fireproof materials, battery cells, modules, thermal management, and system integration; 3. Gather relevant parties to carry out demonstration projects from the perspective of safety and improving the efficiency of energy storage systems to provide important parameters, standards, operations and valuable experience.
After the meeting, the research group, accompanied by Bergstrom China team, visited the workshop, showroom, the TEC, etc.
